I work in a lab sometimes – but it’s a very small part of the job. Lots of my work is in offices, or from home.

Yes, in two ways! First of all, I’m part of a group of 6 people working on very similar topics (a professor, 3 postdocs, 1 PhD and 1 research assistant). We call ourselves a “lab” — it’s not a physical location, but a term to refer to our group: we’re “the speech lab”. Also, I often work in an actual lab, although it’s probably not like the kind of lab you have at school 🙂 It has lots of equipment for recording and playing sound, and a little booth which cuts out lots of external sound so that people can listen to sound in a quiet place.

I spend about half my time in the lab and half in the office reading and writing about science. I think there are some photos of my labs in my profile. Some have electron microscopes in them for looking at tiny details of the materials, others have machines for testing material strengths, and others where we can make new materials

Yes! My work includes working in the lab running experiments, as well as analysing data on the computer

Yes, I do a lot of my work in a lab. Most of the experiments involve testing things about volcanic ash, like at what temperature ash causes water droplets to freeze, or how much toxic gas like sulphur dioxide can be stuck onto ash surfaces. It’s a lot of fun getting to decide what I’m interested in knowing and then designing experiments to try to find the answer!
