Great question! I am so fortunate to have been involved in very different projects so it is hard to choose. I think the most memorable project i’ve been involved in, was an epidemiological study (which means it involved a large number of people participating in the project). We analysed 10,000 urine samples collected from 4,000 people from the USA, UK, China and Japan (very long days in the lab!) and identified how different diets resulted in biochemical changes in the body, which contributed to high and low blood pressure. Although it was hard work, this project had a large project team so as well as my own area, i got to learn about other areas of science which all came together in the end to complete the story. It also meant I had some company in the lab, and we had a lot of fun working together to prepare all those lovely samples!

Ooh, good question. I’ve really enjoyed all the projects I’ve been involved with, and each one has had its own particularly special aspects. One that sticks in my mind was a project to do with singing: we wanted to know how easy it is to understand lyrics when the singer is being accompanied by other voices. The project involved speech scientists like myself, but also a choir and a composer. The composer wrote special pieces of music designed to test these questions, the choir performed them, and the audiences at each of the concerts had special devices to respond to what the choir was singing. My job was to explain to the audiences about the project, collect all the data, and give a quick summary at each concert of what the audience’s responses looked like! So I spent time travelling around the country, listening to some fantastic singers, explaining our work, and sometimes having to think on my feet when things didn’t quite go to plan! It was a great adventure, and I really enjoyed it!

I had a really cool project 2 years ago when I went to Japan to make some new materials. It was fun working with Japanese scientists and learning about their culture, and learning about the science they do. Meeting new, interesting people, is one of the things I like most about being a scientist. The things I made are (as far as I know) the only types of that material in the world. I find it really cool that in the drawer next to my desk are the only pieces of that material ever made! When we did some tests on it, we found out it wasn’t actually very strong and it’s not very good at what it was designed to do… 🙁
But it was useful to find this out, and now we know it isn’t worth making this material again (it was very difficult to make!)
