I like the flexibility, so I can work late if I am really enjoying something, or an experiment is taking a long time, then I could take some time off to ride my bike or catch up on sleep. My boss is quite relaxed about this. Using electron microscopes is really cool as well!

That no two days are ever the same! So it never gets boring. Also, being in academia means i get to connect with researchers from sometimes very different fields to my own. I’m currently involved in a project which is assessing the impact of diet, sensory perception, household income and location, on health – seems like a strange combination but they are linked!

I agree with Anisha that the work is really varied, and I love that! I enjoy the challenge of having to be at least moderately good at a whole bunch of different things 🙂 But I think one of the things I enjoy most is working so closely with other people: regardless of whether I’m talking to other people in the lab who work on very similar things, or people from different fields who work on totally different things, it’s always a real inspiration. And my colleagues provide me with a lot of support during tough times too, which keeps me interested and positive about science even if things aren’t quite going to plan!
