Volcanic eruptions can affect a country or ever a bigger region because they can spread ash and toxic gases like sulphur dioxide and sulphate aerosols over many kilometres. For example, ash from the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland in 2010 spread so widely in the sky that a large part of European air space was closed for several days where airplanes were not allowed to fly. This meant that many people were stranded on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean since their flights were cancelled.
