It varies from 5-6 hours in a day, all the way up to 14-hour days. Typically I work around 10 hours per day, but that’s expected in a startup with lots going on (fundraising, doing interesting science, selling to potential customers, writing grant applications, speaking to universities and building a team).
I try to work from 9-5 each day and then spend the evenings and weekend with family and friends. But sometimes things are busy, and I have to start earlier or work later!
Some of my experiments can take a really long time, like 8-10 hours in one go, plus I have to fit in all the other things like emails, reading, writing, teaching…. So I have some long days – my longest was 9am – 5am the next day with a few hours off to eat and rest. But then I will take a couple of days off completely to catch up on sleep and relax.
Normally I work 10am – 6pm ish, but it varies if I have more or less work to do. I like the freedom to change my hours any time I need to.
It completely different from one day to the next. If i’m in the lab and experiments are going wrong, it might be a long day, and other days if i’m teaching, it will be scheduled between 9am and 6pm
