The best and most fun experiments are the ones that I do with my students as part of their lab classes. I teach students who are studying food and nutritional sciences, and the other week we made yoghurt in the lab! We have also conducted experiments where we used biochemical experiments to measure the amount of protein in popular protein drinks. We then compared these with what was written on the label, and the results were very interesting to say the least! 🙂

I once took part in a series of experiments designed to find out how easy it is to understand the lyrics in songs. The project involved speech scientists (like me), but also a choir and a composer. The composer wrote specially-designed pieces of music for the choir to perform, and at each performance we used special devices to allow the audience to respond to what they were hearing. My job was to collect all the data and explain to the audiences what we were doing and why. So I got to travel around the country, listen to some fantastic singing, tell people about our work and collect some great data!

I had a lot of fun doing some experiments at a laboratory in Tokyo. They are very experienced at making a particular type of material so I went to learn from them for 3 months. I made some new materials which had never been made before which felt quite special and exciting. It was fun to live in another city and country and learn about Japanese life while doing some cool science. Later we found these new materials aren’t very strong and not useful for what we designed them for. But it is all learning!
