Lemurs in the wild live in Madagascar – an island off the coast of southeast Africa. These ‘primates’ (a group that includes monkeys, apes, and humans) once lived all around the world, but other primates were stronger at hunting for food, and so the lemurs eventually died out (from starvation) everywhere except on Madagascar, where they are the only primates. So Madagascar is a tropical paradise with plenty of food for lemurs since they don’t have to worry about competing with other primates! However, the survival of lemurs is now being threatened by humans because of things like destruction of their forest habitat for agriculture, logging, and mining, and by hunting and capture of lemurs for the pet trade. 🙁
